  • Nutrition plays an enormous role in the prevention and treatment of the leading causes of impaired vision in North America: cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). ARMD is the primary cause of blindness in adults over 40, with 25% of 65 year olds showing clinical symptoms. And the incidence of ARMD is increasing. Some of the major risk factors for impaired vision include: smoking, aging, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), high blood pressure, lack of dietary antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, genetic predisposition, and eye strain.

One of the key nutrients that help prevent and treat impaired vision is the carotenoid lutein, a potent antioxidant that is highly concentrated in the eye. In fact, lutein and its companion carotenoid, zeaxanthin, are the only carotenoids found in the human lens. They play a central role in protecting against the development of cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye health problems. Both function by preventing oxidative damage to the area of the retina responsible for fine vision.

Our bodies don’t make lutein, so we have to obtain it from our diet. While some fruits may contain lutein, the richest food sources are vibrantly coloured and dark, leafy green vegetables such as kale, mustard greens, spinach, swiss chard, and red peppers. However, it is unlikely that sufficient lutein can be obtained from food to address advanced eye health problems. Lutein in supplement form is the best way to achieve the recommended amount for preventing and treating eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration.

Several studies have now shown that taking a lutein supplement can reverse ARMD. For example, in one study patients who took 10 mg of lutein daily experienced improvements in several symptoms, including glare recovery, contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. In addition to proving lutein’s important role in preventing cataracts and lowering the risk of developing ARMD, research confirms that it is also a a significant factor in protecting the arteries and lungs from damaging free radicals.

  • Suggested Use: Lutein is an antioxidant for eye health. It promotes the health of the macula, retina and lens with its antioxidant properties and by filtering out damaging blue light. This may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
